Does my job need a building consent?
It depends on the job. As the owner, you decide whether work is exempt from a building consent, and all building work must meet the Building Code either way. The government's checker at canibuildit.govt.nz is a good start, your council can advise, and Joshua can talk it through with you.
Can some small jobs skip a building consent?
Yes, a few, when a Licensed Building Practitioner carries out or supervises the work: single-storey detached buildings up to 30 m², porches and verandas of 20 to 30 m², carports of 20 to 40 m² and ground-floor awnings of 20 to 30 m². Conditions apply. The building.govt.nz guidance sets out the conditions.
How much will my job cost?

Will I get a written contract?
Residential building work over $30,000 including GST comes with consumer protection rules your builder must follow, and building.govt.nz explains them. It also says a contract is worth having whatever the size of the job. Ask Joshua how he handles yours.
